Lumos Fiber.
Internet built for
the future.

Challenge
Lumos is a midsize fiber internet provider in NC and VA. They aimed to expand rapidly and needed a modern, cohesive digital experience to support it. Most potential customers have never had a fiber option in their community, so the site and storytelling had to focus on education and transparency.

Solution
We created an education-focused experience that helps users understand the fiber difference and feel supported by the Lumos team. This was achieved by creating tools that met each audience where they were at, empowering them to choose the right plan for their needs. This was paired with a thoughtful and intuitive visual design language that set Lumos apart from its competitors.

Defining the
guiding principles

After conducting a full site audit, researching industry best in class, and talking to customers…we were able to clearly define our guiding principles. These were our benchmark for everything we designed, wrote, and developed.

No one understands 500 Megabits, but everyone understands Netflix.

“What helps me make a decision is when it asks what you’re doing…social sharing, multiplayer gaming, working remotely. Those catagories would make it easier to decide which plan I would need.”

Design Discovery

A visual system that

walks the walk.

Once the site strategy was set, audience segments were established, and principles defined, the goal of the visual design team was clear. Every piece of the Lumos site, including how we speak, move, and look, should ladder back to the guiding principles. We created a visual system that does just that.

One thing that makes Fiber internet different is much faster upload speeds. So what does that mean exactly?

Our user interviews made a few things clear. When people are choosing an internet plan, they don’t necessarily understand the differences between speed options or how their internet usage correlates.

Instead of a typical speed test, we built one that moved seamlessly from your results into a compelling story about how fiber can increase your bandwidth and stability.
